Most People Don’t Want to Be Managers

Most People Don’t Want to Be Managers | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Most American workers aren’t interested in becoming managers. At least, that’s what a new CareerBuilder survey seems to suggest.

Of the thousands surveyed, only about one-third of workers (34%) said they aspire to leadership positions – and just 7% strive for C-level management (the rest said they aspire to middle-management or department-head roles). Broken down further, the results show that more men (40%) hope to have a leadership role than women (29%), and that African Americans (39%) and LGBT workers (44%) are more likely to want to climb the corporate ladder than the national average.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Recent survey shows that most American workers aren’t interested in becoming managers.

The Importance of Listening to Your Employees

Corporate culture is not static; it grows and changes with the people in it. As a business owner, I like to think that the business has a lot to do with me, but I have realized it has just as much to do with the people who work with me and how they feel about the business.

We spend a lot of time before we hire getting to know prospective employees and making sure they fit the team. I also do employee surveys once a year to gauge where things are. I am far from being the perfect manager, so I am grateful to my employees who have taught me how to improve.

I ask employees what they like about their jobs, what they hate about their jobs, and what they think we should be doing differently. Many of my innovations come from employees' suggestions. But be careful not to ask a question that may yield an answer you will not be ready for.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Want to know what is wrong with your business? Ask your employees, and pay attention to what they say and what they don't say.

A Lesson In Overcoming Adversity Through Innovation

A Lesson In Overcoming Adversity Through Innovation | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Overcoming adversity through innovating is a process that begins with mental toughness, cultivating one’s curiosity, and doing what others aren’t doing.

Mental Toughness

The first step in becoming innovative is accepting that the world around us needs to change, sometimes because of unexpected and unprecedented events, and believing that we as individuals must take initiative to make that change happen. It requires ongoing learning and an open mind with a willingness to see the world in new ways. Upon such realization, one must develop an unshakable mental toughness for the long haul. As Kamkwamba said during his 2009 TED talk, “How I Harnessed The Wind:”

Entrepreneurs are people who dream big, achieve much and make the nation a better place. Having lived in Silicon Valley a few years ago, I recall feeling the vibe of success as I drove past huge companies like Apple, Google and Cisco that were built by entrepreneurs.

A report by MBO Partners, predicts that as much as 50 per cent of the US workforce will be entrepreneurs, freelancers or consultants in six years' time making them effectively self-employed. Similar growth is being experienced in Australia according to Adecco's Temporary Labour report.

What does your future hold? Will you be the next millionaire or billionaire entrepreneur? How do you know if you have an entrepreneurial spirit?

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Today, Australia needs entrepreneurs to arise, set themselves some huge challenges and succeed both for themselves and the nation.

7 Habits of the Most Joyful People in the Office

7 Habits of the Most Joyful People in the Office | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Want to change your mood around the office? It all starts with your actions.

Smile when you walk in the door and people will know you are ready to get things done. Look down at the floor and smirk at people waiting for that morning meeting and you're giving them the message that you'll be hiding in your cubicle all day. Sometimes, seemingly trivial facial expressions, minor activities, and routine habits can reveal your mood. But these habits can do more than just reveal your mood; they can also dictate your mood.

The best way to change your attitude, experience more joy in your work life, and spread a little of that happiness around the office is to adopt habits that foster a better mood. Sure, we all get a little cranky about the Starbucks barista who scoffed at the stain on our shirt or the taxi driver who smelled like yesterday's pizza. No worries. Try a few of these activities and develop habits to increase your happiness during the day.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Want to be happy? Try adopting these habits to change your mood.

Best Advice I Ever Got: Have the Courage to Follow Your Vision

Best Advice I Ever Got: Have the Courage to Follow Your Vision | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

I attribute much of our success to three pieces of advice that have become our guiding principles:

1. Ask, "How much do I really want it?"

My high school crew coach told me that success only depends on one thing: how much you really want it. The difference between winning and losing, he would say, is nothing more than deciding that you want to win.

This advice has had a huge impact on my life and career. Every time I've dreamt up a new idea or venture, my coach's words have come to mind: How much do you really want this?

Asking yourself this question forces you to pause and evaluate the situation honestly. Do you have a true passion for it? Are you ready to do whatever it takes to make it work? Taking a genuine look at how much something matters to you will help you weed out certain projects and make time for the ones that truly captivate you.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

You're the captain of your own ship, so at the end of the day, you must trust yourself to do what's right.

Great Leaders Know How to Reframe a Story

What sets great leaders apart from everyone else? Their ability to reframe their point of view and tell different stories. That's according to Lee Bolman, co-author of How Great Leaders Think: The Art of Reframing.

"How does that work?" I ask, so he uses me as an example. He's read my blog about my husband's and my upcoming move to the Seattle area to support my husband's music career. There are two ways of looking at this story, he says. "One story is that it's good for him and a small price for you, part of two people's long-term commitment to each other. That's one version, but there's another story about how you feel rooted and in love with Woodstock and so leaving comes with a tremendous sense of loss for you."

10 Business Development Techniques to Grow Sales Fast

10 Business Development Techniques to Grow Sales Fast | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

For a little guidance, I give you 10 lessons from John Whitehead, the fabulously successful former chairman of Goldman Sachs. Besides climbing to the top of the corporate ladder and making billions for his firm, Whitehead stormed the beach at Normandy on D-Day. We should memorize his pearls of wisdom:

1. Don't waste your time going after business you don't really want.

We hired a mechanical engineer from West Point this month to help us grow sales. His focus is to help manufacturing engineers in industrial S&P 500 companies understand why Marlin Steel, my company, is better than our competitors. Why? Our clients are not marketing companies, nor are they point of purchase display companies. These folks don't appreciate quality and engineering. Instead, they are looking for the lowest price. Make sure you point your sales and marketing team in the right direction for profitable business.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

Why We're More Likely To Remember Content With Images And Video (Infographic)

Why We're More Likely To Remember Content With Images And Video (Infographic) | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

If you want someone to remember your message--in a presentation, an article, or a report--tell them a story.

Our brains are far more engaged by storytelling than a list of facts--it’s easier for us to remember stories because our brains make little distinction between an experience we are reading about and one that is actually happening. And while we've covered the importance of storytelling before, there is another element that can drive your point home even more--images. That's because visuals add a component to storytelling that text cannot: speed.

This article is interesting when it comes to social media marketing. It is important for marketers to be aware that consumers remember stories easier then lists of facts, because when marketers are choosing how to market their products they should consider this article and the information it has to offer. I agree with the fact that i remember stories more frequently then lists of facts when it comes to marketing and advertising and even when studying for school.

The Church cannot succeed if it, isolates itself, Not only must Christians reach out to Muslims and other faiths in the spirit of ecumenism, but there is a need to embrace other people of different philosophical convictions. This requires ideological tolerance, maturity and self assurance in what one believes in. Such coalition building is made easier by choosing issues that unite organizations and movements and which have less potential causing divisions. At the same time we need an honest and inventive method of dealing with differences. The global movement for economic justice relies considerably on policy analysis and research conducted by hundreds if not thousands of academics researchers and scholars. ?Our consequences of the changing power relations in today's world is that there is more room in the public sphere for the affirmation of collective values and principles, experience proves that an informed public opinion can be powerful today, and can change governments public and international agendas. Again Churches are challenged to make use of this opportunity. They need to read the signs of time and to make their voices heard by responding to peoples cries for justice and dignity, and by speaking truth to the powers- whoever and wherever their may be. ?Christians do not have ready made answers and solutions to propose. The Bible offers guidelines (love, sharing, justice for the poor) but does not defined one "Christian" economy or "Christian" politics. ?Churches and Church related organizations can initiate public debates and largely use media means to reach a broader constituency, furthermore, regional thematic discussions can be facilitated with the ecumenical family. WCC should develop specific analysis depending on the context. ?What are theological implications for commodification common goods? ?How shall we ensure the participation all people in managing common goods in the world? ?How do we deal with power imbalances in the world? ?How can the ecumenical family engage itself effectively and in a coherent and convincing way in addressing global power imbalance? ?How can WCC lead a climate change campaign with social justice as a focus? ?What kind of collective values can be draw for the Churches to guide them in addressing the problem of commodification of common goods? ?The above questions have been answered in our research materials available at http://www.goldenduas.com and alsohttp://www.facebook.com/research of international development solutions and the same are to be discussed by the Churches, public and all its organizations in the interest of public safety, peace, unity, health, wealth, faith, interfaith ?                 Under this circumstances, it is just and necessary that UK, USA, Cambridge, Churches on the International Affairs are requested to accept our research paper and also our research organization as an organization under other faith category to assist the commission to achieve its goal of International Peace and climate changes solutions for the benefit of world community especially Christians, Jewish and Muslims, under the by-law 3.11 of CCIA. In view of the aforementioned submissions in the interest of maintenance of International Peace and Security, UN may be pleased to authorize our organization in the name and style of` Research on International Development Solutions `and also our research report in confirmatory with U/A 96 of the present Charter read with U/A 23 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and thus render Justice.  Now, Palestine Muslims are fighting with Israel , both countries are affected and innocent people are killed frequently which is against the Quranic verses 7:137 & 5:33 that no one can claim Israel Government areas which is a place of Israel People but not Muslim or Christian and they can only Allow worship in the Holy Places of Israel . Make it okay to ask questions

“We have weekly Q&A sessions where the whole company comes together. This was true when we were 20 people and it’s true now when we’re closer to 100. People can ask questions of [CEO Adam D'Angelo], of other managers, or each other. It's really about being encouraging of what people what to know about in the company.

The second area is making it okay to ask outside. We feel comfortable consulting with other companies we might have some connections with, where they might have similar challenges, where we might learn if we share best practices with each other. An example: Recently, we hosted a roundtable where startups came to Quora to talk about infrastructure. A lot of us use Amazon Web Services and we were starting to think about how we could improve cost. We wanted to learn from bigger companies and smaller companies what they had taken on."

4 Steps To Getting What You Want By Chris Gaborit

4 Steps To Getting What You Want By Chris Gaborit | Business Brainpower with the Human Touch | Scoop.it

Is there something you want so badly that it hurts? Is there a secret goal that you have? Do you wish there was a way to get what you want?

If you answered “yes,” then remember these four tips to make your dreams a reality.

1. You Are Drawn To That Thing That You Look At The Most

If you dig down deep into your innermost thoughts, you will discover that the thing you concentrate on the most is the same thing drawing your conscious mind.

At the age of 24, I was working for a nonprofit organization earning a pitiful salary. There was no room for promotion, salary increase, or ever being wealthy. However, one day I heard a man speak about goal setting. This teaching changed my life forever.

7 Ways to Avoid Decision Paralysis

There's a passage in Atul Gawande's Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science that captures three decades of research on human judgment. "The mind overestimates vivid dangers, falls into ruts, and manages multiples pieces of data poorly. It is swayed unduly by desire and emotion and even the time of day. It is affected by the order in which information is presented and how problems are framed."

In this "news-feed" era, there's simply too much information. And as long as Google exists, it will be harder and harder to say "I don't know," even though the feel of not knowing--those vexing moments when we can't think of the answer--is the critical last step of problem-solving. Instead of pushing through a mental impasse, we pull out our phones and search for information, even though more information can often detract us from making an accurate judgment. It's a frustrating, self-perpetuating cycle.

Vicki Kossoff @ The Learning Factor's insight:

The more choices you have, the more stressful it can be. Here's how to move from frustrated to decided.

One hypothesis is that we don't need to acknowledge good as it probably won't hurt us (except for an excess of chocolate or alcohol or the like:) ). However, our freeze, flight and/or flight mechanisms are tuned to react to what our thinking patterns and belief structures tell us are dangers. Our judgement and decision making is based on our thinking patterns, beliefs and motivations, which are derived from our memories and experiences, and probably in part our DNA. So, what is dangerous to one, may or may not be dangerous to another. Self-awareness is one of the key's to this puzzle.

How is your judgement in certain circumstances?
