I attribute much of our success to three pieces of advice that have become our guiding principles:


1. Ask, "How much do I really want it?"


My high school crew coach told me that success only depends on one thing: how much you really want it. The difference between winning and losing, he would say, is nothing more than deciding that you want to win.

 

This advice has had a huge impact on my life and career. Every time I've dreamt up a new idea or venture, my coach's words have come to mind: How much do you really want this?

 

Asking yourself this question forces you to pause and evaluate the situation honestly. Do you have a true passion for it? Are you ready to do whatever it takes to make it work? Taking a genuine look at how much something matters to you will help you weed out certain projects and make time for the ones that truly captivate you.

What sets great leaders apart from everyone else? Their ability to reframe their point of view and tell different stories. That's according to Lee Bolman, co-author of How Great Leaders Think: The Art of Reframing.


"How does that work?" I ask, so he uses me as an example. He's read my blog about my husband's and my upcoming move to the Seattle area to support my husband's music career. There are two ways of looking at this story, he says. "One story is that it's good for him and a small price for you, part of two people's long-term commitment to each other. That's one version, but there's another story about how you feel rooted and in love with Woodstock and so leaving comes with a tremendous sense of loss for you."

Working from home is everyone's dream, right? If that's true, then why did 60 percent of the employees who participated in a Stanford University work-from-home experiment opt to go back to corporate HQ?


The 2013 study offered a sampling of employees in the air travel and hotel booking industry an opportunity to work from home for nine months. Surprisingly, many of them had a very lonely experience. After only a few months, 50 percent of the volunteers and 10 percent of the non-volunteer group asked to return to their cubicles.


Loneliness and lack of social interaction were cited as the No. 1 reason for abandoning home offices, but these aren't the only drawbacks. How can you have your cake and eat it, too? Because I've successfully worked from home for nearly 16 years, I consider myself an expert on the topic.

There's a passage in Atul Gawande's Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science that captures three decades of research on human judgment. "The mind overestimates vivid dangers, falls into ruts, and manages multiples pieces of data poorly. It is swayed unduly by desire and emotion and even the time of day. It is affected by the order in which information is presented and how problems are framed."


In this "news-feed" era, there's simply too much information. And as long as Google exists, it will be harder and harder to say "I don't know," even though the feel of not knowing--those vexing moments when we can't think of the answer--is the critical last step of problem-solving. Instead of pushing through a mental impasse, we pull out our phones and search for information, even though more information can often detract us from making an accurate judgment. It's a frustrating, self-perpetuating cycle.

If you need inspiration to ask the salary question, just think about a plumber.


The plumber isn’t going to come over and walk around looking at the work that a homeowner needs done without talking about money. Eventually the plumber is going to say “You’re looking at about ten thousand dollars worth of work” or the homeowner is going to say “How much is this going to cost me?”


They’re not going to dance around the topic and hope for the best. Only job-seekers do that, and only a certain kind of job-seeker.

Yes salary is important, however, use a little common sense and diplomacy.  Hopefully the hiring manager will broach the subject first.  Bring up salary when it appears the company is seriously interested in you. Above all do your "homework" and research the industry salary standards, the company's salary ranges and your point of entry.
